The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government on Monday announced a public holiday across the province on the 1st of Muharram-ul-Haram 1448 AH, subject to the sighting of the moon by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. According to a notification issued by the K-P Administration Department, "It is notified for general information that 1st Muharram-ul-Haram 1448 AH (2026) will be a Public Holiday (subject to sighting of moon by Markazi Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Pakistan) throughout the province."
Astronomical Predictions
According to astronomical calculations, Muharram-ul-Haram 1448 AH is likely to begin in Pakistan on Wednesday, June 17, as the new moon is not expected to be visible anywhere in the country on the evening of June 15.
Punjab Government Restrictions
Meanwhile, the Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province from Muharram 1 to 10 to ensure public safety and promote religious harmony. Under the restrictions, pillion riding will be banned on Muharram 9 and 10, except for senior citizens, women, Rescue 1122 personnel, and law enforcement officials. Other restrictions under Section 144 will remain in force throughout the first ten days of Muharram.
Security Measures
Strict security arrangements have been completed at all imambargahs in the twin cities. Entry of vehicles and motorcycles into roads and streets surrounding imambargahs will remain prohibited. Closed-circuit cameras have been installed around the venues.
