PM Shehbaz Announces Major Transport Subsidy to Counter Fuel Price Hike
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a significant monthly subsidy for passenger transport vehicles to prevent fare increases in response to rising petroleum prices. The move aims to provide immediate relief to commuters and stabilize the transport sector during economic challenges.
Subsidy Details and Implementation
According to official details released from Islamabad, passenger buses will receive a monthly subsidy of Rs100,000, while minibuses and vans will get Rs40,000 per month. The Prime Minister chaired a high-level meeting that reviewed progress on government subsidies for petroleum products, particularly in light of recent regional tensions affecting fuel markets.
The meeting included comprehensive briefings on national fuel reserves and consumption patterns, confirming that sufficient reserves are available to meet the country's requirements. To ensure transparency and efficiency, subsidy payments are being disbursed through digital wallets, with authorities directed to expedite the release of funds.
Expanded Relief for Cargo and Food Transport
In addition to passenger transport subsidies, the government has announced support for cargo vehicles to help curb rising food prices. Trucks will receive Rs70,000 monthly, large cargo vehicles Rs80,000, and delivery vans Rs35,000 in subsidies. This multi-pronged approach addresses both passenger fare concerns and essential goods transportation costs.
"The government cannot leave the public alone during difficult times," Prime Minister Shehbaz emphasized during the meeting. He noted that petroleum levy has been reduced by Rs80 per liter as part of broader relief measures.
Provincial Cooperation and National Package
The Prime Minister specifically appreciated the Balochistan government for depositing its share for the national relief package and thanked Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti for prompt cooperation. Provincial governments have shared transport vehicle data with federal authorities to facilitate the subsidy distribution process.
Shehbaz expressed hope that other provinces would soon contribute their shares, highlighting that a public relief package worth Rs129 billion has been provided over the past three weeks. This coordinated federal-provincial effort represents a significant commitment to economic stabilization.
Additional Relief Measures Announced
The government has implemented several complementary measures to enhance the subsidy program's effectiveness:
- Pakistan Railways is offering a Rs6 billion subsidy to prevent increases in passenger and freight train fares
- A planned 25% quarterly increase in toll tax has been withdrawn
- The subsidy distribution process began ahead of schedule to ensure timely relief
- Digital payment systems are being utilized to prevent delays and ensure transparency
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to continuing relief measures, stating that the transport sector subsidies represent a crucial component of broader economic support initiatives during challenging economic conditions.
