In a major entertainment development, FX has officially given the green light to a television adaptation of the wildly popular Far Cry video game franchise. The project will be structured as a limited anthology series, bringing the chaotic action and compelling narratives of the games to the small screen.
Creative Powerhouses Behind the Project
The series brings together two celebrated creative minds: Noah Hawley, the mastermind behind the critically acclaimed Fargo television series and the recent Alien: Earth, and Rob McElhenney, the creator and star of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. McElhenney is also set to appear in the series, adding acting to his producing duties.
Hawley expressed his enthusiasm for the source material, drawing parallels to his previous work. "What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it's an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme," he stated. He described the opportunity to create a dynamic action series that explores human nature through a complex lens as "a dream come true."
Production and Distribution Details
The series will be produced by FX Productions, with a robust team of executive producers from Hawley's 26 Keys, McElhenney's More Better Productions, 3 Arts, and Ubisoft Film & Television. This collaboration builds on FX's existing successful partnerships with both creators, which span six series and an impressive 32 seasons of television combined.
For viewers, the series is set to stream on Hulu in the United States and internationally on Disney+. True to the spirit of the games, each season will follow the established anthology format, featuring a brand new cast of characters and a fresh, immersive location, ensuring the show remains innovative year after year.
A Beloved Gaming Franchise Comes to Life
The source material, Ubisoft's Far Cry franchise, is a titan in the gaming industry. Since its launch in 2004, the series has attracted more than 100 million unique players worldwide. It is renowned for its open-world design and, notably, its memorable and distinctive antagonists, such as Giancarlo Esposito's portrayal of Antón in Far Cry 6.
Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, acknowledged the trust placed in them, saying, "We couldn't be more excited that they are teaming up for Far Cry," and thanked Ubisoft for "entrusting us with this beloved property." McElhenney echoed the sentiment, calling the chance to work with Hawley "a dream realised."
This announcement comes on the heels of Hawley signing a new overall deal with FX and Disney Entertainment Television, and the renewal of his series Alien: Earth, which holds a stellar 92% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, for a second season.
