Rod Stewart has faced criticism from some fans after attending Scotland's FIFA World Cup match against Haiti in Boston just hours after cancelling a scheduled concert in California due to illness. The 81-year-old music icon was due to perform in Chula Vista, California, but his team announced the show had been cancelled following medical advice.
Concert Cancellation Due to Illness
A statement shared on social media explained that Stewart had been diagnosed with an acute upper respiratory infection, which resulted in laryngitis. Shortly before the concert was due to begin, Stewart personally apologised to fans and said he was feeling physically better after treatment but that his voice had not recovered sufficiently for him to perform.
Travel to World Cup Match
However, the following day Stewart posted a video showing himself travelling by private jet with his sons to Boston for Scotland's World Cup group match. In the clip, he excitedly explained that it had been 28 years since Scotland last appeared at the tournament and revealed that his children had never previously experienced the occasion. The family ended the video with chants of “No Scotland, no party” before heading into the stadium.
Fan Backlash
Stewart was later photographed celebrating enthusiastically in the stands as Scotland secured victory over Haiti. The appearance triggered criticism from some disappointed concertgoers who questioned how the singer could travel across the country so soon after cancelling a performance. Several fans voiced their frustrations online, arguing that the late cancellation had disrupted travel plans and left them disappointed.
Medical Explanation
Despite the backlash, Stewart's health issue specifically affected his ability to sing rather than his ability to travel. Laryngitis can prevent performers from safely using their voices even when they otherwise feel well enough to carry out normal activities.
Stewart's Career and Future Plans
The veteran star has continued performing for more than six decades and remains one of Britain's most successful recording artists. He has previously stated that although he intends to scale back major tours, he has no plans to retire completely. Stewart recently hinted that a forthcoming UK run could potentially be his final large-scale series of shows. His next scheduled performance is set to take place at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre in Colorado.
