In a bold move to combat worsening smog conditions, the Punjab Environment Protection Department has announced sweeping changes to school operating hours across the province. The new directive, set to take effect from November 15, carries severe financial penalties for educational institutions that fail to comply.
Strict Penalties for Non-Compliance
The department has established a graduated fine system that could see violators paying up to Rs1 million. According to the official notification, first-time offenders will face a Rs100,000 penalty, while subsequent violations will result in fines escalating to Rs500,000 and ultimately reaching the maximum Rs1 million for repeated non-compliance.
New School Schedule Details
The revised timings mandate that all public and private schools must operate from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. This adjustment aims to minimize children's exposure to hazardous smog levels during peak morning hours when pollution concentrations are typically highest.

Director General Environment Punjab, Ms. Andleeb Abbas, emphasized that the decision stems from growing concerns about air quality and its impact on children's health. "Protecting our younger generation from the harmful effects of smog is our top priority," she stated. "These measures are necessary to ensure students can learn in a safe environment while contributing to broader efforts against air pollution."
Implementation and Monitoring
The Environment Department has established a comprehensive monitoring system to enforce the new regulations. Inspection teams will be deployed across Punjab to ensure schools adhere to the revised schedule. The department has also set up a dedicated complaint cell where citizens can report violations.
School administrations have been instructed to display the new timings prominently at their entrances and communicate the changes to parents and staff. The directive applies to all educational institutions regardless of their medium of instruction or curriculum.
