Lahore Revives Basant Festival After 20+ Years with Free Transport & Kite Sales
Lahore Basant Festival Returns After 20+ Years

After a hiatus of more than two decades, the historic city of Lahore is poised to host the colorful and joyous Basant festival from February 6 to 8, marking a significant cultural revival. The festivities will kick off with the official commencement of kite and string sales starting Sunday, as authorities have granted permission to registered traders to engage in this traditional business. However, this commercial activity is strictly limited to the festival period, with a complete ban on manufacturing and sales set to take effect after February 8, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

Trader Registrations and Approvals for Kite Sales

In preparation for the festival, a total of 2,504 traders submitted online applications for registration to sell kites and related materials. Out of these, 2,246 have been officially approved, allowing them to legally buy and sell kite-related items in Lahore. The registration process remains ongoing, with 163 applications still under review and 95 rejected due to various compliance issues. Authorities have confirmed that the registration window will stay open until February 8, providing an opportunity for additional traders to apply and participate in the festivities.

Free Public Transport Initiative for Basant Celebrations

To enhance accessibility and encourage public participation, the Punjab Mass Transit Authority has announced a comprehensive free public transport scheme during the three-day Basant festival. From February 6 to 8, commuters will enjoy complimentary travel on multiple transit services across Lahore. This initiative includes:

  • Speedo buses, electric buses, and feeder services, ensuring widespread coverage.

Specifically, 64 metro buses will run free of cost on the Shahdara to Gajumata route, benefiting nearly 150,000 commuters each day. Additionally, 188 feeder buses across 21 routes and 40 electric buses on two routes will provide free travel, making it easier for residents to join the celebrations.

Expected Impact and Daily Benefits

Overall, the free transport initiative is estimated to benefit around 600,000 passengers daily during the Basant festival, significantly reducing travel costs and promoting a festive atmosphere. This move not only supports the cultural event but also underscores the government's commitment to public welfare and urban mobility. The revival of Basant after such a long gap is expected to boost local tourism, foster community spirit, and preserve Lahore's rich heritage, making it a memorable occasion for all involved.
