In a significant move to address the pressing economic and trade concerns of the business community in Balochistan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) for Industries and Production, Jamshed Ahmed Dasti, held a detailed meeting with representatives of the Chaman Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Addressing Core Trade and Border Challenges
The meeting, which took place recently, served as a direct channel for local traders and industrialists to voice their longstanding issues. The delegation from Chaman, led by Chamber President Haji Abdul Rahim Kakar, presented a comprehensive overview of the hurdles impeding business growth in the region.
A primary focus was the situation at the Pak-Afghan border crossing in Chaman. Participants discussed the frequent closures and stringent regulations that disrupt the flow of goods, causing substantial financial losses to traders on both sides. The need for predictable and streamlined border procedures was strongly emphasized to facilitate legitimate trade.
Infrastructure deficiencies also featured prominently in the discussions. The business leaders highlighted problems related to inadequate road networks, unreliable electricity supply, and a lack of cold storage facilities. These shortcomings not only increase operational costs but also limit the region's potential to export perishable goods.
Government's Assurance and Action Plan
SAPM Jamshed Dasti gave a patient hearing to all the concerns raised. He assured the delegation that the federal government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, is fully committed to resolving the problems faced by the business community in Balochistan.
Dasti pledged to personally take up the matter of border trade complications with the relevant federal ministries, including Interior and Commerce, to find a permanent solution. He recognized Chaman's vital role as a trade gateway and stressed the importance of creating an enabling environment for commerce.
Regarding infrastructure, the SAPM promised to advocate for the inclusion of Chaman's development projects in federal and provincial plans. He specifically mentioned working towards improvements in the Quetta-Chaman highway and ensuring a better power supply for industrial zones.
Focus on Local Industry and Future Steps
The conversation extended beyond immediate grievances to discuss long-term growth. The potential of local industries, particularly fruit processing and packaging, was explored. Dasti encouraged the chamber members to modernize their practices and explore value-addition to enhance competitiveness.
Both parties agreed to maintain continuous dialogue and establish a follow-up mechanism. The Chaman Chamber will provide detailed proposals on the discussed points, while the SAPM's office will coordinate with concerned departments to track progress.
This engagement is seen as a positive step towards bridging the gap between policymakers and the business community in one of Pakistan's most strategically important regions. The outcomes of this meeting are expected to pave the way for concrete measures that will boost trade, create jobs, and stimulate economic activity in Chaman and surrounding areas.
