The government of Balochistan has taken significant steps to boost economic activity and support its citizens, with a major expansion of a key youth initiative and the introduction of new subsidy schemes. Provincial officials confirmed the cabinet's approval to extend the Enterprise Development Programme to the districts of Gwadar, Kech, and Awaran.
Major Boost for Youth-Led Businesses in Remote Areas
This expanded enterprise programme is designed to foster inclusive growth by backing youth-led businesses and income-generating activities in the province's underdeveloped and remote regions. The core of the initiative involves providing interest-free loans to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and startups, offering crucial financial support where it is needed most.
According to official documents, this programme is a part of the Balochistan Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the fiscal year 2025-26. The total allocation for this initiative is a substantial Rs16 billion, with approximately Rs3.5 billion earmarked for the current fiscal year, signaling a strong commitment to its implementation.
New Subsidies for Electric Bikes and Health Insurance
In a separate but equally important decision, the provincial cabinet has given the green light to a subsidised electric bike scheme. This plan aims to reduce transportation costs for key segments of society, including students, working women, and government employees. Under this scheme, eligible buyers will benefit from a government subsidy of up to 30% on the purchase price. The remaining cost can be managed through convenient bank instalments, making electric mobility more accessible.
Furthermore, the government unveiled a new health insurance programme for provincial government employees, aiming to provide them with better medical security and benefits.
Linking Provincial Efforts with National Goals
These provincial initiatives align with broader national objectives. Earlier in 2025, the federal government announced a larger electric vehicle rollout plan. That national strategy includes the distribution of Chinese-made e-bikes and other electric vehicles to youth across the country, including in Balochistan. The dual goals are to promote green transport and generate new employment opportunities, creating a synergy between federal and provincial efforts.
The expansion of the Enterprise Development Programme to Gwadar, Kech, and Awaran, coupled with the new subsidy schemes, represents a multi-pronged approach by the Balochistan government. It focuses on stimulating the local economy through youth entrepreneurship, easing the financial burden of daily commutes, and enhancing welfare for its workforce, all crucial for the province's sustainable development.
