Deadly LNG Explosion and Fire Engulf Hyderabad CNG Station, Killing Employee
A powerful explosion followed by a massive fire erupted at a CNG station in Hyderabad on Friday, resulting in the death of a station employee and sparking widespread panic in the surrounding areas. The incident, which involved an LNG cargo container and a nearby filling station, marks the third fire-related tragedy on the Hyderabad Bypass road within just two months, highlighting a concerning pattern of safety lapses.
Sequence of Events and Immediate Impact
Residents near the Wadhu Wah Gate were jolted awake early Friday morning by a deafening bang, as the Star CNG station became the epicenter of a devastating inferno. According to Dilbar Halepoto, spokesman for Rescue 1122, the blaze originated from a truck loaded with dozens of black-colored LNG cylinders and quickly spread to the station's CNG storage room, which was filled with white-colored cylinders. The fire then extended to the CNG refilling tanks, creating a scene of chaos and destruction.
Eyewitnesses, including those living in nearby buildings, captured and shared images and videos of the flames, which also spread to an adjacent house. Fortunately, firefighters acted swiftly to douse the fire before it could engulf other residential structures, though the incident did cause damage such as broken glass windows and burnt batteries used for power backup in another house.
Casualties and Community Response
The fire claimed the life of Allah Bux Chajro, a staff member at the CNG station, whose completely burnt body was recovered after extinguishing efforts were completed. This brings the total death toll from fires at CNG stations along the bypass road to three in recent months. Iftikhar Samo, a resident living opposite the site, described how the sky remained covered in black smoke for several hours, with the explosion and fire occurring around 7:30 am.
Despite the proximity of a mosque and unauthorized stands for buses, vans, and taxis to the burnt station, no other individuals were directly harmed in the incident, a stroke of luck given the potential for greater tragedy.
Official Reactions and Investigation
Top officials from the district administration and police have remained tight-lipped about the explosion, raising questions about accountability and safety measures. The Bhitai Nagar police, under whose jurisdiction the incident occurred, stated that they would register a First Information Report (FIR) only if the family of the deceased Chajro approaches them, indicating a reactive rather than proactive approach to the investigation.
This repeated occurrence of fires at CNG stations along a 1.5-kilometer stretch of the Hyderabad Bypass road underscores urgent needs for enhanced safety protocols and regulatory oversight to prevent future incidents and protect both workers and residents in the area.
