Senator Krishna Kumari Calls for Enhanced Support for Women in Agriculture

Senator Krishna Kumari emphasized on Thursday that women involved in the agriculture sector are indispensable to Pakistan's development and food security, despite confronting significant challenges. She advocated for a holistic strategy to promote their welfare and prosperity. This statement was made during a ceremony at Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) in Hyderabad, organized by the Center for Agriculture and Biosciences International (CABI) Office in observance of International Women's Day.

Addressing Health and Economic Challenges

In her address, Senator Kumari pointed out that female agricultural workers often suffer adverse health effects from exposure to toxic pesticides. She underscored the legacy of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, who initiated numerous programs to empower women. Continuing this mission, the Government of Sindh has launched extensive initiatives aimed at fostering women's self-reliance. These efforts encompass education, healthcare, skills training, the Income Support Program, the Pink Bus Service, and free Pink Scooty facilities. Senator Kumari stressed the necessity for all stakeholders to collaborate in formulating a comprehensive strategy for women's welfare.

University and International Perspectives

Prof. Dr. Altaf Ali Siyal, Vice Chancellor of SAU, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the pivotal role women play in societal advancement. He noted that while women work alongside men in agriculture and livestock, they frequently receive only half the wages, a clear violation of their rights. To address this, SAU is prioritizing women in admissions and employment opportunities, allocating more scholarship seats to alleviate financial barriers to education.

Haibatullah Asad, Head of the CABI Tandojam Office, remarked that women are primarily responsible for tasks from cotton cultivation to picking. The event was organized by CABI Science to honor these diligent workers. Additional speakers, including Deputy Director of Agricultural Research Sanaullah Solangi, contributed to the discussion.

Panel Discussion on Women's Issues

A panel discussion featured insights from Kausar Mukhtiar, In-charge of the Women Protection Cell Mirpurkhas, Advocate Nusrat Miyano, Prof. Dr. Tahseen Fatima Miyano, and Dr. Shabana Memon from SAU. They explored the societal roles of women, the obstacles they encounter, and potential solutions to enhance their status and well-being.
