Ramazan Rush: Record Date Prices and Adulteration Scandal Hit Rawalpindi Markets
Ramazan Date Price Surge and Adulteration in Rawalpindi

With the holy month of Ramazan fast approaching, wholesale markets and commission agent bazaars in Rawalpindi have experienced a significant surge in the wholesale and retail purchase of essential food items for iftar and sehri. This seasonal demand spike is particularly evident for dates, a traditional staple during the fasting period, where wholesale activity has reached its peak. However, this year brings concerning trends, as prices for all varieties of dates have escalated to unprecedented record levels, putting financial strain on consumers.

Adulteration Practices Intensify in Open Markets

Amidst the price hikes, a disturbing practice has intensified in the open market: the sale of old dates being passed off as fresh ones. Vendors are reportedly engaging in deceptive methods to rejuvenate stale stock. According to sources, old dates are first heated in boiling water, then dipped in sugar syrup, and finally coated with cooking oil before being marketed as fresh produce. This process not only misleads buyers but also raises health concerns, as these dates are often partially spoiled or dried before treatment.

Profit-Driven Processing and Distribution

Shopkeepers in surrounding areas are allegedly earning substantial profits by processing and selling these old, low-quality dried dates at cheaper rates. Across Rawalpindi, street vendors have begun offering these adulterated dates at approximately Rs450 per kilogram, capitalizing on the high demand. Dealers explain that the old and damaged dried dates are placed in large woks filled with boiling water. After removal, they are soaked in sugar syrup for a period and then dipped in cooking oil, making them relatively soft and sweet to mimic freshness.

These processed dates are primarily being prepared for low-cost Sasta Bazaars, targeting budget-conscious shoppers. Furnaces used for this date processing have become operational in key areas, including Narankari Bazaar, Ganjmandi, Hamilton Road, Pirwadhai, Dhoke Hassu, and Fauji Colony. In contrast, normal dates are being sold at Rs650 to Rs800 per kilogram, while good-quality dates command prices ranging from Rs1,000 to Rs1,600 per kilogram, highlighting a stark quality and price divide.

Regional Demand and Supply Dynamics

The demand for dates extends beyond Rawalpindi, with grocery shopkeepers and street vendors from Azad Kashmir, Abbottabad, the Hazara region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and nearby districts such as Jhelum, Chakwal, and Attock purchasing dates in bulk from Narankari Bazaar and Ganjmandi wholesale markets. This regional influx underscores the widespread impact of these market trends. Additionally, Iranian and Saudi dates of various qualities are available in large quantities, offering alternatives but also contributing to the complex pricing and quality landscape.

As Ramazan approaches, consumers are urged to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of dates to avoid health risks and ensure they receive value for their money in this critical period.
